Build A Gazebo
So, you want to build a gazebo! If you have done any research on the
web, you will have found a plethora of information. If you are
looking for gazebo plans, you can choose between build it yourself
plans or by selecting a kit that will provide some of the components
already built that you will just have to assemble.
Before you decide to build a gazebo with either of those options
though, here are some things to consider. 1. Location 2. Size 3.
Open or Enclosed
We will start with location. You have probably chosen to build a
gazebo as an excellent way to add instant personality to your yard.
Adding a gazebo to your yard can create a focal point that draws the
eye away from less attractive elements and provides an outdoor area
destination for your family and friends. Before you commence to
build a gazebo in your yard though, please check with your local
building department and homeowners association, if you are part of
one. Most areas do not require building permits on structures under
120 square feet, but some areas will require a building permit for
any outdoor structure to ensure safety. In addition, there may be
homeowner association restrictions as to style and location. It
would be a shame to get started on your project, only to be
issued a
violation. It never hurts to check first. Also, if you plan to build
a gazebo near water, there may be some additional permitting
requirements or set back restrictions. Your local planning and
zoning department, or building department will be able to give you
the answers you need. One of the biggest benefits of building a
gazebo on your property is that it basically adds another 'room'
with a view. The word 'gazebo' is actually a combination of the
words 'gaze' and 'about'!

In deciding on the size of your gazebo, take into account what you
are going to be using it for. A little cozy sitting area only needs
to be about 6 feet in diameter while a gazebo pavilion that will
house a table and built in benches will require much more space. The
size of your yard or garden will also be a factor when you decide to
build a gazebo as you want to create a visual balance in your
landscape. There are so many designs to choose from, it will be
helpful if you have an idea of what your objectives are before you
begin to build a gazebo on your property.
The amount of insects in your area will be a determining factor on
whether you want to enclose your gazebo, or leave it open. A
beautiful sunset vista will not be enjoyable if you are being
swarmed by mosquitoes! Also, be sure to measure the eye level of your
seats so that you can make sure that your view is not obstructed by
the edge of a railing.
If you take these suggestions into consideration, your decision to
build a gazebo will result in a well designed, attractive addition
to your property that will add many hours of outdoor enjoyment to
your life!
