When You Need More Room, Bunk Bed Plans Can Help

The kids are growing up and your family is expanding; you need more room in your house. More ideally, your kids need more room as they get bigger. Bunk bed plans can help you solve your space problems. Bunk beds are the perfect solution for freeing up much needed space. As an added benefit, most kids love the idea of having a bunk bed in their room.

It could be the same fascination that tree houses have to kids; being up high, or simply being a little different than the usual. When you have decided on constructing your own bunk bed, then you need bunk bed plans that make sense for you.

It starts with size

Not every room is going to be able to handle every type of bunk bed. There are, in fact, many different types of bunk bed plans that are available, depending on the layout of the room, the size, and the needs of the kids. There are straight bunks beds with one bed stacked above the other, which is the traditional layout. With this type of bunk bed, you can add different features, such as dresser-style drawers, lighting so they can read in bed, or even a shelf at the foot of the bed, which can be ideal for the person on the top bunk.

There are also L-shaped bunk bed plans that can accommodate a desk below the upper bunk, or even a dresser. Not every room will be ideal for these larger bunk beds because of the position of the door, closet, or windows. Even heaters can affect where a bunk bed can go.

When you review bunk bed plans, be sure to take into consideration the size of the room and the layout so that the plan you decide on will fit without any inconvenience to the children or to yourself.

The steps are an important consideration

With any bunk bed plans, the steps, or stairs is an important consideration. While many bunk beds traditionally have a ladder of a few steps built into the frame, there are other options that may be better suited to certain kids.

Steps can be built into the footboard to allow the person on the bottom of the bunk easy access in and out of his or her lower bunk. For children who may have a bit of trouble negotiating a vertical step, you can pitch the steps by adding them to the end of the bed. Depending on where you decide to place the steps will determine also where you can place the bunk bed in the room.

Some bunk bed plans will include steps that can be moved to accommodate different needs and different layouts. If you think that the bunk bed will be moved from time to time when your kids want to try a different layout, then an adjustable step location would be the best solution.

If the bunk bed plans don’t have this option, you can easily work them into your plans by designing a harness or connecting hardware to easily secure the steps once they are needed.
