Computer Desk Plans Should Be About
Efficiency and Strength
Having the right computer desk plans to build your own office desk,
or to simply build one for your children or den, means having a plan
that complements not only the room, but also what kind of computers
will be used on and around the desk. In our modern computer age,
laptops and other lightweight components are replacing the
traditional towers and heavier computers.
There are also other considerations when it comes to computer desk
plans, and these can include wiring, electrical outlets, and
Ethernet cables. The last thing you want when you finally build that
computer desk is to have to run a series of unsightly cables across
the room because this wasn’t a consideration.
Strong desks can handle anything
While it may be a bit presumptuous to state that a strong computer
desk can withstand anything, the heavier the wood, the more likely
it will be that the desk will handle books, computers, and other
items that will inevitably pile on top of it over the weeks, months,
and years. Though these items may not seem all that heavy by
themselves, when they are added, one after another, to any surface,
the stress they create increases exponentially.
Using a strong wood, such as oak or maple, is one of the best
choices for computer desks and when you find computer desk plans
that specifically call for these wood types, then you know that what
you build will be strong enough to handle just about everything.

Particle board, or pressed board, is popular with a lot of
pre-fabricated desks that you can find in office supply stores and
furniture outlets, but this has more to do with keeping prices down,
not producing a high-quality, enduring item. If you are going to
build your own computer desk, then you should make sure to invest in
wood that will last for many years.
Options available
Computer desk plans can offer a variety of options for storage,
depending on the location of the desk. There are simple, functional
computer desks that can be stored in a corner, or even in a closet.
There are straight-line desks that would be positioned along one
wall. And there are corner desks that attempt to make the most with
the space given in a particular room.
Corner desks may not be as economical as far as space is concerned
because the portion of the desk in the corner will be either
unusable or unfeasible. However, this could be the ideal location
for a computer monitor or a row of books.
Computer desk plans should take into consideration the amount of use
it will receive as well as the aesthetic properties. Often, a desk
is located in a bedroom, away from guests’ view. In this case, you
may be willing to sacrifice appearance to some degree for function.
However, if your desk is to be displayed where people will see it
regularly, then you may want to consider a more attractive design.
Finish matters
The finish of your desk is what will make it shine in the end. When
you’ve chosen your computer desk plans and completed your project,
you will want to sand down the surface with a fine, 140 or higher
sandpaper, and then apply one of two types of finishes: varnish and
penetrating resin. These two finishes are durable and ideal for
computer desks.
