Finding the Ideal Platform Bed Plans
Platform beds have been used for hundreds of years, and for good
reason. When you decide to search for the best platform bed plans,
then there are a few things that you should keep in mind. You can go
with the most simple of platform bed plans, which would not include
a headboard, footboard, or any other features, or you could have
dresser drawers, a headboard with lighting and shelves overhead, and
even a footboard that doubles as a storage chest.
There are a number of advantages and disadvantages to platform beds
and much of it has to do with size. At their core, platform beds are
basically the same; they are all based on the concept of a platform
board to support the mattress. The rest is cosmetic.
Size matters
Platform bed plans can seem prefect on paper, but the key is to
determine whether it will be ideal for the planned room. There’s
nothing worse than designing and then building a platform bed only
to realize that once it’s together, there’s no room for anything
else. When you find some platform bed plans that you feel would suit
your needs, then measure out the total area, both the length and the
width, as well as the height to mark these measurements in the
bedroom it will be used.

Take a step back and visualize the bed within that marked area. Does
it leave room for other furniture? Will it allow you to move around
without too much trouble? Or will it consume too much precious real
estate? This is the best way to figure out if the platform bed plans
will work for your specific situation. Unless you will be building a
platform bed without anything else to it, then don’t rely on an
existing mattress as a guide.
While there are a number of other woodworking projects that allow
you to modify the sizes in the plans to enlarge or shrink the
overall size, this isn’t possible with platform bed plans. Mattress
sizes in this country are fixed. You can either get a twin, full,
queen, or king size, with a few smaller sizes for young children.
Pine for it
Pine is perhaps the most common wood used for platform beds. This is
due to its light weight and texture. Of course, oak is also a
popular choice, but when working with platform beds, the overall
size will determine the total weight. You want to make sure that if
you choose platform bed plans that have large headboards,
footboards, and even drawers underneath, that your home’s
construction will be able to handle the weight.
Using a #3 or better pine is ideal for these larger projects. You
will also want to be able to put it together in the room, otherwise
it might be difficult to maneuver through the doorway or narrow
halls.
Far too many people look to platform beds without much thought about
their size or weight. When looking for platform bed plans, don’t
neglect these two important factors.
