Swing Set Plans Your Children Will Love

There are literally dozens of different types of swing set plans to choose from when you want to build your own. There are basic swing set plans to harken back to the days of old as well as those that come with everything a modern child may want, including a climbing rope, slide, and more. When you select the right swing set plans for your family, make sure that it will fit well within your yard and not take over the entire neighborhood.

Lumber and hardware

Since the swing set will be exposed to a variety of weather conditions, including wind, sun, rain, and possibly snow and sleet (depending on your geographic location), then you want to make sure that the lumber you choose is pressure treated to resist moisture, rotting, and insect infestation. Termites are a common problem with wood structures that are either touching the ground or in close proximity.

You will also want to use galvanized hardware, such as lag screws and bolts to resist rust and corrosion. While these items certainly cost more in the short-term, you children’s health and safety are far more important in the long run.

A note about pressure treated lumber

Pressure treated lumber is treated with harsh, strong chemicals, so it is important that you wear gloves and a mask as well as other protective clothing when building this swing set. You will also want to paint or varnish all of the wood surfaces when done so that those harsh chemicals remain safely within the wood.

As mentioned, swing set plans are about as varied as children themselves are, and the more intricate and detailed the swing set plans, the more skill you will be required to have in order to construct it.

Safety first

Since this swing set will be for children, safety is the number one priority with any swing set plans. If you are not adept at woodworking projects, then you will want to focus on the more simple A-frame swing set plans, as opposed to those that have complicated angles and fastening points.

You will also need help to put the swing set completely together, regardless of which swing set plans you decide to work with. Even the simple A-frame construction will stand higher than the average adult could possibly reach.

Do not, for any reason, cut corners trying to save time. While it may seem reasonable to attach the cross beam to the A-frame first and then raise it into position, the pressure this can create on the joint may cause a crack to form, weakening the structure.

Level playing surface

Whatever swing set plans you decide to work with, you want to ensure that you build on a level surface. This may require you to remove soil or add in certain areas. If the swing set is not level, added stress will be placed on joints that may not be able to handle it. Don’t assume that since the ground looks level that it is; make sure you use a straight long board and a level. Safety should always be the first priority when building a swing set.
